Warbler Watching

The route we took through the bush, we came back on the road

My brother and I went out to look for birds This afternoon. It was pretty successful. We saw a lot of Yellow-rumped Warblers and a Palm Warbler. A real treat to see was a Black-throated Green Warbler. We then went hiking through the bush in the neighborhood for an hour or two.  Never saw very many birds. We discovered a great variety of perfect habitats for birds.

Assiniboine Park - English Garden birding

We went to Assiniboine Park in the English Gardens with Christian Artuso the coordinator of the Manitoba Breeding Bird Atlas. We had to wake up at 7:00 AM so only me and my mom went. I used Christian's camera most of the time so I don't have many pictures right now.

 We saw many different warblers, Nashville Warbler, Tennessee Warbler, American Redstart, Common Yellowthroat, Yellow Warbler, Orange-crowned Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Palm Warbler and maybe some others that I missed. Many of these warblers I have never seen before.

 We also saw many Cedar Waxwings in the trees. We saw lots of robins, White-breasted Nuthatch's, chickadees, woodpeckers, Swainson's Thrushes, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks and much more.
We saw a hummingbird and I got some very good pictures of it with Christian's Camera.
Then we went to the duck pond and saw many Mallards, who have a different plumage right now so they are not green. There were a couple Ring-necked Ducks which were fun to watch and take pictures of. After being at the duck pond a while we went back to the gardens.

My favorite bird we saw there was the Eastern Screech Owl sleeping in a tree the whole time we were there. We got really close to it but its face was somewhat covered by branches.

I went for a walk around my yard this morning, birds were singing everywhere. There were many, many, many Tennessee Warblers. Everywhere you looked they were flitting around in bushes and trees. Even though there were so many, it was difficult to get a good picture because they were never still, they are  lively little birds.

We are doing renovations in our sun room and we were allowed to draw on the drywall. I drew a falcon and cut it out and saving it in my room.

Migration Birds

Fall migration is here. I have been seeing Ruby-crowned Kinglets, a White-throated Sparrow, thrushes, warblers and redstarts in the bush. Pretty soon we will be seeing Redpolls and Pine Grosbeaks at our feeders, they stay here for the winter.

Cornell Lab guide to bird sounds - Essential set to North America

We bought the Cornell Lab of Ornithology essential set to bird sounds a couple of days ago. It is the introduction deal at $12.99 , saving $7. It has 1376 recordings from 727 different birds. So far I love it. You can buy the Master Set for 49.99 which comes with over 4,000 recordings. So far I love the essential set! Sometimes when I play some of the sounds my mom and dad think they are real birds and are wondering what they are (that happens with my birdsong alarm clock too). I definitely would recommend it if  you want to buy bird sounds.

Fall is almost here

Summer is winding down, bird season is almost over. I went on a couple of bikes and walks in Birds Hill Park, and there were barely any birds, except for chickadees and a hawk. Its fall migration and most of the birds are moving out. Fortunately some new birds will be staying for the winter, Pine Grosbeaks and we usually see an owl in here in the winter : ). Look for the birds that will be migrating here soon, and have a great fall.

Trip to the Zoo

My twin brother and I went to the Assiniboine Park Zoo with some friends. Like any time you visit the zoo we saw lots of animals. First we went to the new Australian Walkabout. There were Emu's and Kangaroo's that you walked around with, but weren't aloud to go to close to them.
There were peafowl walking around all over the zoo beside the paths.

Note: I didn't know what lots of the birds were, if any of you know, I would appreciate it if you told me. Also it was hard to get good pictures of the animals in fences because the camera would focus on the fence not the animals.

We walked around for the rest of the day. I took a lot of flower pictures for my mom at the butterfly garden.
We saw quite a few birds exhibits; Steller's Jay's, Pileated Woodpeckers, Steller's Sea Eagles, Bald Eagles, Pink Flamingo's, Scarlet Ibis', Victoria Crowned Pigeon, Tawny Frogmouth and a lot of others. My favorite birds there were the huge Steller's Sea Eagles and Snowy Owls.
There were some bats also. There were different types of frogs and other amphibians and reptiles. There were big cats like tigers, lions, snow leapords, ocelots and Linx's. There were bison, one of which was white, camels, different kinds of sheep and horses and more.
Hudson the polar bear was waving his head back and forth the whole time we were watching him.
