Feathers on Friday

In early January we had some goldfinches show up at our feeders, and it was on my FeederWatch days! I counted 9 altogether.

Weekly What Bird Wednesday

Make your own Weekly What Bird post and put the link in the comments and I'll put the link in the post.

This weeks I don't know what it is! I haven't been able to identify this bird for sure, I have some ideas though. I believe these two photos have the same species in it. At the end of the week I'll send these photos to Christian Artuso to confirm the identification.
Guess or ID this bird, I don't know what it is.

I believe this is the same species as the bird in the photo above

There were several species in last weeks Weekly What Bird, the most numerous were Canvasbacks. There was also a Blue-winged Teal I believe, and a Redhead! A Redhead is a new bird for my life list! I had always thought they were Canvasbacks, but after looking very closely it looks like a Redhead! That brings my Life List and 2013 Year list up to 135 sp.!

The First Sign of Spring

They say a robin is the first sign of Spring, well I guess Spring must be coming awfully early this year ;), just kidding, still a couple months till warm weather. Yesterday we were driving in town, we were on Meadowood Drive and a robin flew out in front of us. With it's red breast it was hard to miss. I made a couple of ebird checklists for when we were out there.

Three Birding Days

Since it's warmed up quite a bit here I've taken that to my advantage and done some birding walks. It's been around -15 C, but last night it was 2 C!!! But we were in a bit of a storm so I never got to go outside. Over the past three days I have a birding walk around our yard each day. I have seen magpies, the Great-horned Owl, Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers, White-breasted Nuthatches, but most of all chickadees! I made ebird checklist for all of them also!

Day one: My twin brother came with me .I saw a squirrel on the way outback. Saw a magpie and the Great-horned Owl. Saw White-breasted Nuthatches, Downy Woodpeckers and Chickadees.

Day Two: Went out by my self to look for magpies. Took some pictures of a magpie through bushes! My first decent picture of a magpie! My brother had good ones but not me. I really like magpies, they look very nice.
Black-billed Magpie
Got some really nice pictures of one flying. I noticed it had something in it's mouth when I looked at the pictures later. I think it looks like a cheesy. :)

Day Three: My brother came with me, he used the camera while I used my binoculars. We found this eaten mouse or something impaled on a thorn. This is what shrikes do with their prey they catch. I thought it was very interesting to see.
Eaten mouse or something impaled on a thorn, a shrike has been here.

Canadian Birding. ;). Just kidding, it's not actually that deep.

Feathers on Friday

I always thought these were two Pine Siskin, but now that I looked closer I think on looks like a Common Redpoll. It's hard to tell. Let me know what you think

New Page, Mammal Life List

All my life I loved mammals, even since I was very young. I never had an intense interest like I do with birds but I always liked to watch them and draw them. I read many books about mammals, especially bears, which were my favorite. I wrote a little series with information on mammals called the 'All About Series' when I young.
My new Mammal Life List page only has listed the mammals I have seen in the wild!
I just started a mammal life list on this blog. I tried to recall all the wild mammals I have seen in my life. When I was young we took a trip to South Dakota and camped there and saw many different types of mammals, bison, Mountain Goats, Bighorn Sheep, Elk and many others. Here are a few pictures that we have of mammals.

A Chipmunk that was living under our porch for a bit, until we found it dead in our garage.

THIS PHOTO IS NOT IN WILD! This is at cinnamon colored Black Bear in Bear Country U.S, a sort of a zoo. Black Bears can vary in color from cinnamon, to brown to even white!
